Toxic Water at Camp Lejeune
Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers Represent Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Victims
Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is the site of one of the worst water contamination cases in our country’s history. For over 30 years, Camp Lejeune residents used water that was contaminated with a host of toxic chemicals that have been linked to serious health conditions.
Fuel pollutants, cleaning solvents, and industrial wastewater from leaking underground storage tanks made their way into Camp Lejeune wells and water supplies at concentration levels that were 280 times the amount accepted by safety standards. Military service people, their families, and civilians living on the base drank, cooked with, and bathed in this contaminated water, leaving them susceptible to serious illness and even death.
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act
The Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act Of 2021 (PACT act) addresses health care issues and other concerns related to veterans who were exposed to toxic substances during military service. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act is a bill currently making its way through Congress and, if passed, will be placed within the larger PACT Act of 2021. This will allow veterans, civilian employees, and family members who lived on or worked at the Camp Lejeune base for 30 days or more from 1953 to 1987 to file reimbursement claims in federal court.
The Camp Lejeune Act has been in and out of Congress for decades. Now, finally, the bill is likely to pass after so many injuries and deaths have been documented. The Camp Lejeune Act would also allow parties who lived on or worked at the Camp Lejeune base during that time to file a claim regardless of whether they have been diagnosed with a specific illness or disease. This is a major step towards providing victims affected by Camp Lejeune toxic water with much-needed compensation after years of suffering.
Although the total impact of the contamination and the range to which the contamination spread are still under investigation, there are many known injuries linked to the exposure, including:
- Breast cancer
- Leukemia
- Miscarriage
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Renal Toxicity
