A South Philadelphia woman was killed by a drunk driver on the 2300 block of 7th Street Saturday. Philadelphia Police say that a man in black Ford F-150 pick-up overaccelerated from a parking spot on 7th and Ritner and crashed into a Nissan SUV on the other side of the street. The driver them reversed at a high rate of speed, striking a woman on the sidewalk, mere feet from her home. She was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Methodist Hospital Campus and later died of her injuries.

The driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital with injuries. Police have since arrested and charged him with driving under the influence and impounded the truck pending further investigation. No additional details on the incident have been released.

Driving under the influence is a serious offense that carries significant legal consequences in Pennsylvania, especially when resulting in fatalities. Penalties for DUI are based on the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) and any history of prior offenses. Higher BAC levels or repeat offenses result in increasingly severe penalties, including longer incarceration, higher fines, license suspension, and mandatory community service, highway safety school, and alcohol treatment programs.

Beyond the legal consequences of DUI convictions, offenders often face other repercussions, such as increased insurance premiums, loss of employment and professional licenses, and future opportunities due to a criminal record.
