A 5-year-old is in critical condition following a chain-reaction crash in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday. According to police, three vehicles stopped at the intersection of Aramingo Avenue at Wakeling Street were involved in a chain reaction crash after a speeding Ford Taurus rear-ended at least one of the cars. The police said the Ford struck with such force that it lost a wheel.
The 5-year-old occupant in the Ford suffered severe head injuries due to the impact of the crash and was rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital. The child is listed in life-threatening critical condition, police said. None of the others involved in the crash were seriously injured, including another 6-year-old child.
Authorities said speed significantly contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against the Ford’s driver, the injured child’s mother.
Rear-end collisions often cause chain reactions involving multiple cars when the force of impact pushes vehicles into others. Chain reactions significantly increase the likelihood of severe injuries due to the multiple impacts from different directions. Common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, whiplash, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, and organ damage.
