Thirteen people were injured after a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a disabled bus carrying military personnel, temporarily closing a portion of the New Jersey Turnpike on Wednesday.
According to the New Jersey State Police, the bus broke down in the northbound lane, just south of Interchange 3 and Highway 168 in Runnemede. The truck driver and 12 bus passengers sustained multiple injuries, though their condition is unknown. The crash remains under investigation.
Breaking down on a major highway, such as the New Jersey Turnpike, poses significant accident risks. Fast-moving traffic and limited escape routes create a dangerous situation. When a vehicle stops unexpectedly on a busy roadway, the risk of being struck by other vehicles increases significantly, particularly in poor visibility or if drivers are distracted.
If your car breaks down on a major highway and you are forced to stop, you should take the following measures:
- Pull off the road entirely onto the right shoulder or emergency lane, as far from traffic as possible.
- Turn on your hazard lights so you can be seen.
- Stay seat-belted inside your vehicle.
- Call roadside assistance or emergency services for help.
- Wait inside your car for help to arrive.
Only exit your vehicle if it is safe or if you have no other options. Never attempt repairs or tire changes on the side of a major highway.
