Philadelphia police are investigating a crash that killed a bicyclist along Cobbs Creek Parkway Thursday morning.

According to officials, the incident occurred about 8 a.m. when a Mack dump truck making a right turn onto 58th Street from eastbound Baltimore Avenue struck the cyclist, who was also traveling eastbound on Baltimore Avenue.

Police say the cyclist became lodged underneath the dump truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing, officials said.

Drivers of all vehicles, especially large commercial trucks, should be alert for bicyclists, particularly in urban areas with bike lanes such as Baltimore Avenue. When turning, always check mirrors and blind spots carefully, yield to cyclists in bike lanes or crossing intersections, and use turn signals well in advance. Slowing down and giving cyclists ample space can help prevent tragic outcomes.

Cyclists face significant risk when riding near large trucks, particularly in densely populated areas with narrow streets and unpredictable traffic patterns. Give turning trucks plenty of room and stay out of their blind spots to prevent a devastating accident.
