Four people are injured and a toddler dead after a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer near Hockessin on Sunday. Authorities say the five were traveling southbound on Newport Gap Pike in a Jeep Grand Cherokee when the driver veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The Jeep driver and a two-year-old boy were rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries. The child was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The other passengers, which included two additional minors, were treated at area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was uninjured.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact investigators or anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers. Private messages can also be sent directly to the Delaware State Police on Facebook.
Head-on collisions between tractor-trailers and passenger cars are one of the most devastating types of vehicle accidents. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), nearly 5,000 annual fatal crashes involve commercial trucks, many of which are head-on collisions.
