Safety Car Picks for 2020

Consumer Reports has released its picks for the best new cars of 2020. The criteria that determined which cars made the list included performance in road tests, owner satisfaction, reliability predictions, and safety. The cars were rated with extra points added for those models with an impressive catalog of standard safety features. The inclusion of innovative safety features, which has always been an important factor, had an important component added this year involving standard pedestrian detection as part of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. The only cars that were considered include an AEB system, now with pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning (FCW).

Considering the recent spike in pedestrian traffic deaths, Consumer Reports considers these life-saving features to be so vital to car safety that manufacturers should include them without extra charges for options packages. Cars with blind-spot warning (BSW) technology on standard models were also given additional points in the rankings. Consumer Reports broke out additional features and benefits, such as fuel efficiency, driving performance, cabin comfort, and style.
