According to a study by Time Magazine, a local Bucks County intersection has earned the title of the “most dangerous” intersection in the United States. The study used National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data to track fatal motor vehicle accident sites throughout the United States between 2003 and 2012. The intersection where Knights Road meets Street Road in Bensalem, Bucks County had seven fatal crashes over this ten-year time-period.
Dangerous intersections were reviewed in all fifty states. The study examined fatal accident sites that occurred within approximately 150 feet of each other while focusing on sites involving the crossing of two or more roads.
The Bensalem intersection is located on a one mile stretch of Street Road that was the site of 144 crashes in the two years prior to the Time Magazine audit. During that period, at least 170 people died or were injured due to vehicle crashes.
Factors that may contribute to this dangerous stretch of roadway include poor signage, dim lighting and the presence of aggressive drivers. This traffic area also has a high volume of drivers with over 36,000 vehicles traveling on Street Road each day.
The study revealed that in most states, the most dangerous intersection was found in a major city. The chance of a fatal motor vehicle accident is higher with more people on the road.
The NHTSA data also listed human error as a major factor in driving fatalities. Distracted driving, inattentive driving and driving with an obstructed view caused over 50% of the motor vehicle crashes according to the study. Poor decision-making was listed as the cause of almost 30% of motor vehicle crashes including those related to poor timing and driver aggression.
The amount of fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents continues to rise. In 2016, the National Safety Council recorded over 40,000 deaths resulting from motor vehicle crashes in the United States.
An estimated 4.6 million Americans suffered additional injuries. Car, truck and other motor vehicle accidents can often lead to catastrophic bodily injuries including broken bones, concussions, loss of limbs, traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding.
