It is common knowledge that drinking and driving is a dangerous combination, but many are not aware of the serious and deadly potential of drowsy driving. A new study has shown that drowsy drivers may be more common, and therefore just as dangerous, on the roads as drunk drivers. The study, conducted by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), found that drivers who have not had sufficient sleep are responsible for up to 20% of all fatalities on American roadways each year. The annual cost of fatigue-related crashes approaches a shocking $110 billion per year in personal injury expenses.
The GHSA study found that every year there are close to 330,000 car accidents that are a direct result of tired, fatigued drivers behind the wheel. This amounts to almost 110,000 injuries and a tragic 6,400 fatalities caused by drowsy drivers.
Many distracted driving motor vehicle accidents occur because commercial truck drivers are forced to work longer and longer hours. Around 20% of commercial truck accidents and bus accidents are thought to be the result of overtired drivers. However, the largest group contributing to drowsy driving crashes was not truck drivers, but rather drivers aged 25 years or younger.
One unexpected finding from the GHSA study was that lack of sleep can mimic the effect of alcohol. Drivers who had not slept for over 18 hours had similar reaction times to drivers with a .05% blood alcohol content (BAC). Drowsy drivers who had not slept for over 24 hours acted similarly to drivers with a .10% BAC.
One of the reasons why it is so hard to stop drowsy driving is that law enforcement officials lack the tools or training to help identify offending drivers. As casualties of drowsy driving steadily increase, some states are pushing for more stringent laws to hold drowsy drivers accountable.
