The toy safety advocacy group “W.A.T.C.H.” recently announced their 10 most dangerous toys of 2016. The toys that made this list have a strong likelihood for causing personal injuries. Some of the toys making this year’s list may surprise you.
Toys That Can Cause Eye Injuries
Kids love getting messy, but parents might want to find an alternative to the Slimeball Slinger sold at Toys “R” Us and Amazon. The toy includes a slingshot designed to shoot projectile “slimeballs” up to 30 feet. This toy poses a serious risk of eye injuries. The Flying Heroes Superman Launcher, aimed at children as young as four and sold at most major toy retailers is another toy that poses a risk of eye injuries. The Nerf Rival Apollo XV-700 Blaster is the third toy to make the list for posing a risk of eye injuries.
Toys With Choking Hazards
Choking is one of the greatest hazards infants and toddlers face. Every parent knows that young children love to put anything and everything into their mouths. The Baby Magic Feed and Play baby doll is recommended for children ages two and older, but it includes a feeding spoon small enough to block a child’s airway. Another toy posing a choking risk is Peppa Pig’s Muddy Puddles Family set. Some of these packages are not properly marked with choking warnings although they include small parts.
Hazards for Suffocation, Puncture Wounds
Naptime also comes with some potential hazards for young children. The advertisement for the Kids Time Baby Children’s Elephant Pillow shows an infant sleeping with the pillow, though federal law prohibits the sale of pillows for children under one. The package does not include any age recommendation. The Peppy Pups plush dog might seem great to cuddle with at bedtime, but a cord that is more than twice as long as the industry standard poses a strangulation hazard.
The Banzai Bump N’ Bounce Body Bumpers packaging recommends kids use protective equipment but does not include it or display children wearing it. The Good Dinosaur Galloping Butch sold at Walmart, Amazon, and Toys “R” Us, has a pointy tail that can cause serious puncture wounds. That toy is recommended for children aged three and up. Finally, the Warcraft Doomhammer encourages kids to “feel the power of the horde.” The hammer is sizeable and heavy, potentially leading to some bumps and bruises in the heat of battle.
