Summer Months Mean an Increase of Driving Accidents

Forget the icy roads of winter; summer is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), August is the most dangerous driving month. This is, in large part, because of the increased number of vehicles during the summer months. Summer is the season of family vacations and college road trips. Some of the other reasons for the increased summer roadway danger include:

  • Increased number of bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Increased number of teenage drivers on the road
  • Increased road construction

The weather is nice, people are on vacation, and everyone is getting out on the road. Heightened congestion on the road combined with distracted driving and fatigued driving due to long road trips means things are bound to be more dangerous.

My family is going on a road trip for summer vacation. How do I ensure that we have a safe trip?

While there are no ways to completely protect you or your family on a summer road trip, there are safety precautions that will help increase the odds of a safe journey. The NHTSA recommends the following safe driving practices for summer travel:

  • Wear your seatbelt for any trip, regardless of the length and destination.
  • Never drive after drinking.
  • Check the air pressure and tread of your tires.
  • Make sure child safety equipment, such as car seats, are properly installed.

Additionally, you should take breaks from driving to prevent fatigue. Being as familiar as possible with your driving route can also prevent accidents caused by looking distractedly at your GPS or making sudden and unexpected turns.

Also, never text and drive. If you need to check or send a text message, pull over. Distraction.gov, the official U.S. government website for distracted driving, states that 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 people were injured in 2014 in vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. You may not be able to prevent other distracted drivers on the road, but not being a distracted driver yourself will make you more aware of these other drivers and make the roads safer for everyone.
