Medical Malpractice Found to be the Third Leading Cause of Death in the United States

Medicine has come a long way in the last century, with new breakthroughs made daily. However, a recent study by Johns Hopkins University found that medical errors made in hospitals and other healthcare facilities is now the third leading cause of death in the United States, just behind heart disease and cancer. Medical errors and negligence has been linked to over 250,000 deaths each year, or approximately 700 deaths each day. Importantly, this number does NOT include the patients who suffered serious injuries due to medical errors annually, which one expert stated, may be 40 times the death rate!

The study calculated the number of deaths that would not have occurred were it not for hospital or medical staff errors. They considered deaths to be the facility’s fault whenever the cause of death was due to a healthcare provider not acting in accordance with the training and standards of the profession.  Hospitals have been well aware of these issues for decades, but avoid discussing publicly due to the overwhelming financial liability.

Medical negligence takes many forms. It ranges from hospital staff causing preventable infections to doctors misdiagnosing illnesses. Preventable infections are often caused by reckless safety measures and not following proper protocol when dealing with patients. Another recent study found that doctors and nurses only disinfect their hands between patients about half of the time. These infections can wreak havoc on already vulnerable patients and can lead to an untimely death.
